I love how you can make the most amazing plans and then they can all fall apart just by simply sitting beside the wrong person on a plane.
My IF idea was working out perfectly. I ate around 5pm - had a lovely salad with lots of protein. I was drinking lots of water and I was starting to strategize my sleeping position to optimize my posture, and minimize my back pain.
Then I got to my seat.
I do not speak french very often but can still understand it so when I arrived at my seat I found myself sitting with a really nice family. 3 girls and their parents, all from Montreal and flying to London for a 27-day long family vacation. As I arrived I could hear the daughters poking fun at their mom (in french) and she getting frustrated in response. It brought me back to travelling with my sisters. Get the 4 of us going and we might as well have our own comedy special on netflix (s/o to my blonde squad). Anyways - I don't think I even had the chance to sit down before the mother was introducing herself to me. She asked if I spoke french, we exchanged some words in french, and then I thought it was time to settle in.
I could not have been more wrong. I proceeded to get a french lesson - always a welcome thing. Then I was being educated on where gluten comes from. That was a bite-my-tongue kind of conversation. We talked about reading food labels, cholesterol, and "My 600lb Life".
Then we took off.
This woman, bless her soul, was so sweet but for an overnight flight I would have taken the grumpy old guy who doesn't want to talk. So we take off and of course, being that there are massive engines on this plane, it made some noise. Well my new friend did not like that. I am enjoying one of my favourite parts of the flight, my movie has started, and I get a tap on my arm - "This is too loud... it is very loud... this hurts my ears."
I am pretty sure I just smiled and said it would be over soon. It is at this moment that she tells me she can't sleep on planes and is letting her husband sleep because he is doing the driving. She also pre-apologizes for keeping me up.
So I decided I would stay up and wait for the meal to be served. It was chicken, a grain of some kind (?), a corn salad, a bun and a brownie. I get the chicken and so does my new friend. I take a bite and instantly burn my tongue and before I could warn my friend she is burning her tongue and telling her husband, her children, and - you guessed it - me.
I finally got my free wine, enjoyed that in record time and put my headphones in to finish watching Jumanji. Great movie by the way. Nothing worth any kind of award but I was in tears laughing a couple of times.
And yes, my friend did check on me while I was crying laughing to see if I was okay.
So the flight goes on and I start feeling the snooze train pulling into the station. I put the complimentary pillow at my low back and my Dreamville pillow behind my neck and slightly to the side so I can rest my head. Well then I get a tap on my shoulder... she had to use the restroom.
The wine cart came back shortly after this so I asked for another bottle and challenged myself to beat my last record time. Mission accomplished.
Now that I had a bit of a buzz I could really commit to this friendship. She came back from the bathroom and we gabbed like old girl friends catching up. It was actually really funny and fun and I think just the right amount of conversation to allow me to sleep in peace.
I may have gotten 3 hours of spotty sleep but when I woke up, my friend had gotten me a glass of OJ and the breakfast loaf that I would have otherwise missed because I was sleeping.
We shared a few more stories and opinions, the plane landed and we bid adieu.
I am now sitting in Heathrow airport, 1 medium americano coursing through my veins, a quick stretch completed, and taking in all of the people-watching that this massive airport provides.
I may be slightly sleep deprived but I love that I had that silly experience on my flight over. Travelling alone always poses the risk of feeling isolated in new places, but I think that flight has shown me that that won't be the case. I seem to invite conversation (Maybe a little too much).
I am so excited to get on this plane to Copenhagen and start really exploring!
